Around 2700 BCE, intoxicated by the vast caloric surplus carried by the flooding of the Nile, the Old Kingdom of Egypt erected monumental pyramids as an overwhelming display of unspendable energy.
Yet, when a planetary drought dried up the land’s physical denominator, a theocratic order incapable of downsizing carved desperate prayers—spells of salvation—into hollow stone facades packed with mud and rubble, tumbling helplessly down the slope of self-destruction.
Four thousand years later.
The feast of petroleum has passed its peak, and the net energy return of the earth steadily withers away.Refusing to acknowledge an era of contraction, modern priests congregating in glass temples continue to build new altars for rainmaking along the coastlines, invoking names like “Nuclear Fusion,” “GX,” and “Circular Economy.”
An “artificial sun” that devours far more energy than the heat it could ever return.
The “myth of recycling,” tossing even heavier fossil fuels into the gutter just to reclaim a fraction of oil.
When blessed with physical surplus, they erect megalithic mountains of grand delusion.
When that surplus vanishes, they cling to spells of technology, hurtling toward their own demise.
Shifting forms, swapping tools, yet destined to repeat the exact same blunders time and again—a fable depicting humanity’s cold, immutable biological memory.
